What is phthalate free?

Phthalate free means anything free of phthalates.  So, what are phthalates? Why should I be avoiding phthalates?  How can I identify whether or not phthalates are in the products I buy?

Phthalates (pronounced THAL-ates) are ingredients in many of the everyday products that we use such as: shampoo, perfumes, cosmetics, lotions, etc.  They are also added to plastics to give them elasticity to make them softer and more flexible such as: vinyl flooring, shoes, toys, shower curtains, car interiors, etc.

Phthalates are immune system invaders.  They are being linked to growing number of health conditions such as: neurological damage, breast cancer and allergies, they are also endocrine disruptors and can cause damage to reproductive damage especially in males.  Phthalate exposure has been linked to lower sperm count and also reduces female reproductive ability in females.  Liver and kidney damage as well as asthma have been linked to phthalate exposure.

To identify prducts containing phthalates can sometimes be a little tricky.  The labels may not even say phthalates are included.  So here is a couple of ways to help you identify the potential carcinogens.

According to the organization, "Pollution in People", you can identify some phthalates by their chemical names or chemical abbreviations such as:

DBP:  (di-n-butyl) phthalate and DEP (diethyl) phthalate are oftentimes found in personal care products, nail polishes, deoderants, womens perfume and mens cologne and aftershave lotions, shampoo, hair gels and body lotions.

DEHP ( di-( 2- ethylhexyl ) phthalate) or BIS ( 2- ethylhexyl) phthalate) What? I can barely even spell it, or pronounce it yet, I am expected to know that it is found in PVC plastics, including some medical devices.

BzBP ( benzylbutyl phthalate) used in flooring ( like vinyl), car products and could be in some personal care products.

DMP ( dimethyl phthalate)  is used in insect repellent ( the name should be enough to scare them off )  and some plastics.

Another term, that can be used instead of phthalate, is "fragrance"..it is simply used instead of listing a combination of compounds which could possibly contain phthalates (which can mimic horomones, and has been linked to early development of breasts in young females).  Choose products that contain essential oils, especially if you are prone to allergies.

Choose products with the recycling codes of 1, 2, or 5 instead of 3 and 7 which are more likely than the others to contain bisphenol A or phthalates.

As far as your baby is concerned here are some better choices for you to consider putting on her skin.
