Preserving The Future
Parabens
First of all, what are parabens? Parabens are preservatives used by cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies. They are put into a wide range of products including shampoos, body lotions, shaving gels and toothpaste. They are used as antimicrobial and antifungal preservatives in cosmetics and in food and beverages and used to prevent the growth of mold.
To preserve or not preserve that is the question. Well the answer is not as simple as the question. The answer is highly debatable on both sides of the spectrum. Some say parabens are bad some say good, so what do you do? Products have to be preserved. Without the use of some sort of preservative these products will expire at some point and possibly set up a deadly growth of mold and bacteria.
Some in the debate say parabens are possible carcinogens, the debate is still open and tests are still being done. So, here is an alternative. Look for products that are certified vegan or not tested on animals and use only the purest organic herbs and pure essential oils as their main ingredients. Try to stay up to date on new environmentally friendly products and research ingredients to see if they are safe. Also parabens have been used for over 50 years and without something to preserve the products the hazards could be worse. Most people can tolerate parabens in products some may get a slight rash from products that are not rinsed off like lotions, but the instances are rare.
Certain essential oils, like tea tree oil can reduce the chance of spoilage in products. Some vitamins, like vitamin E can reduce some bacteria. Products using these ingredients can be a safe alternative. So, as we said the debate is still open on the health risks of using parabens, but we do know the risks of NOT using a preservative. Do your homework.

What is phthalate free?
Phthalate free means anything free of phthalates. So, what are phthalates? Why should I be avoiding phthalates? How can I identify whether or not phthalates are in the products I buy?
Phthalates (pronounced THAL-ates) are ingredients in many of the everyday products that we use such as: shampoo, perfumes, cosmetics, lotions, etc. They are also added to plastics to give them elasticity to make them softer and more flexible such as: vinyl flooring, shoes, toys, shower curtains, car interiors, etc.
Phthalates are immune system invaders. They are being linked to growing number of health conditions such as: neurological damage, breast cancer and allergies, they are also endocrine disruptors and can cause damage to reproductive damage especially in males. Phthalate exposure has been linked to lower sperm count and also reduces female reproductive ability in females. Liver and kidney damage as well as asthma have been linked to phthalate exposure.
To identify prducts containing phthalates can sometimes be a little tricky. The labels may not even say phthalates are included. So here is a couple of ways to help you identify the potential carcinogens.
BzBP ( benzylbutyl phthalate) used in flooring ( like vinyl), car products and could be in some personal care products.
DMP ( dimethyl phthalate) is used in insect repellent ( the name should be enough to scare them off ) and some plastics.
Another term, that can be used instead of phthalate, is "fragrance"..it is simply used instead of listing a combination of compounds which could possibly contain phthalates (which can mimic horomones, and has been linked to early development of breasts in young females). Choose products that contain essential oils, especially if you are prone to allergies.
Choose products with the recycling codes of 1, 2, or 5 instead of 3 and 7 which are more likely than the others to contain bisphenol A or phthalates.
As far as your baby is concerned here are some better choices for you to consider putting on her skin.

According to the organization, "Pollution in People", you can identify some phthalates by their chemical names or chemical abbreviations such as:
DBP: (di-n-butyl) phthalate and DEP (diethyl) phthalate are oftentimes found in personal care products, nail polishes, deoderants, womens perfume and mens cologne and aftershave lotions, shampoo, hair gels and body lotions.
DEHP ( di-( 2- ethylhexyl ) phthalate) or BIS ( 2- ethylhexyl) phthalate) What? I can barely even spell it, or pronounce it yet, I am expected to know that it is found in PVC plastics, including some medical devices.
DMP ( dimethyl phthalate) is used in insect repellent ( the name should be enough to scare them off ) and some plastics.
